Dani Keller: Fredericksburg’s Newest Professional Labor Doula
Why did you become a doula?
Through every phase of my life, supporting families has been an integral part of my personality. Maturing from a teenage girl providing babysitting to a working mother providing experienced nanny services, I have provided care for countless families. Realizing that the emotional and physical requirements of families start even earlier than those a nanny could provide, I was inspired to transition to working with birthing families to help foster a powerful and strong experience right from the very start.
What’s one thing about you that surprises people?
I love to wear makeup and get biweekly pedicures. I’m also a die-hard sports fan (LET’S GO New York Rangers!) What can I say? I refuse to be defined by any one part of my personality, and I think my different levels are what make it easy for me to connect to a variety of people.
What is the best part of being a mother?
I love connecting my kids to my childhood, whether it be providing them the freedom to play outdoors or traveling to the same vacation spots I frequented as a child. It has been absolutely amazing to see old, familiar experiences of my childhood through their new, fresh perspectives.
How would your kids describe you?
My 11 year old said cuddly, and my 16 year old said “interesting”. Yes, she giggled as she did actually make sure that the quotation marks were used. But she was quick to follow it up by saying I was also open-minded and thoughtful. I personally think Supermom would work well too.
What do you like to read/watch?
When I’m not reading whatever I can get my hands on for birth and parenting, my favorite fallback is anything by Toni Morrison. I have read everything she has ever written multiple times. Her words are like art to me...
I hate to admit how much I love TV too, but it's the truth. I am often found watching every NHL hockey game I can catch or binge watching pretty much any of the Netflix Original Programming. Current favorites include House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. I, of course, adore Call the Midwife as well.
What are your top three tips for a new family?
Learn to trust your own intuition. It’s the most powerful tool a parent has got. If it feels right, do it. If you feel unsure about something, that is powerful too, and as your doula I’m happy to help you figure out what is right for you.
Redefine the word "productive" for a while. In a today's world, new moms don't spend nearly enough time recovering from childbirth and adjusting to their growing family. Cleaning the house, doing laundry, and making dinner aren't the only ways to be productive with your time. Healing, bonding, even resting are all very beneficial, and generative parts of how to recover after having a baby.
"The days are long, but the years are short". I love to share this quote by Gretchen Rubin because it truly puts into perspective exactly what parenting looks and feels like.
What makes you the best doula for our clients?
Because my personality includes being a little bit of everything, I am able to authentically connect and relate to my clients on a multitude of levels. I provide a personalized "one of a kind" support experience built upon the foundational belief that my mission is to support you, your way. Combining polished skill with personality, I deliver the best mix of supportive services based on evidence-based education and your unique needs.
